Dark Web & Cybercrime: Crime in the Shadows

The internet we use every day has lots of websites that we can find using search engines like Google or Bing. This is only a small part of the internet. There is a bigger hidden part that we can’t find with regular search engines or browsers. This hidden part of the internet has two areas. The Deep Web and the Dark Web. The Dark Web is known for being secret and private. It is also linked to Cyber Crimes which is a part of the curriculum at top forensic science colleges in Nashik. We can’t access the Dark Web with browsers. To browse it we need software called Tor. Tor helps to hide about us and where we are, by sending our connections through servers, around the world. The Dark Web uses Tor to keep information of an individual anonymous. The Dark Web and Tor are connected in a way that keeps users hidden.

Learning About Layers of the Internet

To understand where the Dark Web fits in, layers of the internet are important. So let us think of the internet as being made up of three parts. The Surface Web is like the face of the internet. It has all the information that everyone can see, like news websites and online stores. The Deep Web is different; it has information that’s not easy to find, like private medical records and databases that are not open to everyone. Then there is the Dark Web, which’s a part of the Deep Web but it is hidden and people need special software to access it. The Deep Web is generally not a place people use it for normal things. However, the Dark Web has a name because of all the illegal things that happen on the Dark Web.

The Operational Mechanism of the Dark Web

The mechanism of the Dark Web works through anonymous networks, where both the host and the user are concealed. The sites on the Dark Web generally use “.onion” web addresses instead of standard domain names, which are often complex to remember, share or verify and thus make the tasks more difficult. The messages that are transferred through the Dark Web are encrypted. The Dark Web ensures that no server involved in the communication chain can identify the start point or the end point of the message – making it very difficult to intercept.  The anonymity that protects whistle-blowers, journalists and political dissidents from oppressive regimes also protects criminal organisations trying to keep their actions secret.

Cybercriminal activities in the Dark Web

The Dark Web is full of sites and forums. You can find various kinds of cybercrime here. Some of the different types of cybercrimes that people commit on the Dark Web are as follows:

  • Theft of Data Sources: The Dark Web sells stolen databases of credit card numbers, login information and personal identification details. People deal in bulk. They usually have access to this information through data leaks on websites.
  • Virus as a Service: Today, cybercriminals do not need to be experts in technology anymore. They just have to rent ready-made malware, spyware and phishing kits. These kits have manual and technical support.
  • Hacking for Money: In the Dark Web, there are services where people can pay to hack a website. You can also pay to perform or obtain a distributed denial-of-service attack. You can also pay to access the systems of the intended victim.
  • Other Illegal Goods and Services: The Dark Web does not just deal with cybercrime. It also sells drugs, false documents and guns. The persons who buy these illegal goods normally pay in cryptocurrency. In this way, both the seller and the buyer will remain anonymous.

Cryptocurrency and Secret Transactions

Cryptocurrency and secret transactions are very important. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and special coins like Monero are used a lot for deals on the Dark Web. When you use banks, people can see who is sending and getting money. With cryptocurrency the person sending and the person getting the money can stay secret. This makes it very hard to follow the money. Some markets also use a system where a third person holds the money until the deal is done. This is, like what real online stores do to make people trust them. These markets are not legal.

Law Enforcement and Digital Forensics

The Dark Web is not really a place. People can still find out what is going on there. Law enforcement agencies around the world have special teams that use digital forensics and work with other countries to catch bad people. They do things like look at blockchain transactions to figure out who is making cryptocurrency payments. They also make fake accounts to get into forums and find weaknesses in the software that people use to hide their identities.

There have been some successes, like when they shut down big drug marketplaces and ransomware networks. This shows that if law enforcement agencies work together and do not give up they can find out what is going on in the most secret parts of the internet. Law enforcement agencies and digital forensics are important in this process. The work of law enforcement agencies is very important in stopping people on the Dark Web.

Conclusion

The Dark Web is a strange thing about the internet. It was made to keep people safe and let them say what they want. Now it is mostly used by people who do bad things on computers. To stay safe, we need to know how the Dark Web works. This means we need to know about the ways people hide who they are and how they use special money that is only on computers. This is important for people who work to keep the internet safe, like someone holding an M.Sc in Forensic Science. It is also important, for anyone who wants to know about the things that can happen on the internet. As computers and the internet get better the bad people will try ways to hide and the good people will try new ways to catch them. The Dark Web will keep changing. We need to stay ahead of the bad people who use it.
